GET INVOLVED

There are several ways you, as a City of Peoria citizen, can have a voice in the decisions made regarding the drinking water system. You can attend and participate in City Council meetings, Citizen Bond Committee meetings, and the Peoria Leadership Institute, a series of classes on City of Peoria government. These forums all provide ways for you to express your opinions and concerns regarding our drinking water system and allow you to learn more about the decision-making process. For more information regarding these forums please visit www.peoriaaz.gov or call 623-773-7000.

In addition, the Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP) report for the City of Peoria is now available for review. Based on a mandate set forth in the 1996 amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) evaluated each water source used by public water systems in Arizona. ADEQ looked at the quality of groundwater being drawn into wells, the watersheds supplying surface water, and land use activities occurring near drinking water sources. This information is used to determine the degree to which a public drinking water source is protected from, or at risk of, contamination. It is also used to assist local communities in implementing source water protection measures to preserve drinking water quality.

When preparing Peoria’s SWAP, ADEQ evaluated 24 wells. One of these wells was found to have a high risk of contamination. Because of this, ADEQ lists the whole Peoria system as having a high risk of contamination. This does not mean contamination is imminent or even active, just possible. City of Peoria water quality sampling has not shown any contamination in any City wells. The full SWAP report for the City of Peoria can be reviewed at both Peoria public libraries and the Utilities Department office. The well in question was not used in 2004.
