Water Reuse: A Way of the Future

Water reuse, also known as water reclamation, is the collection and treatment of wastewater from homes and businesses to be utilized where potable (drinking) water is not required. Water reuse pipes, which are completely separate from the drinking water system, deliver water to golf courses, common areas, school grounds, roadside landscaping, and decorative lakes. The purple pipes designate that reclaimed water is being used.

Water Reuse in Peoria

The City has begun to incorporate reclaimed water as a key element in its water supply and is developing a Water Reuse Master Plan and a water reuse ordinance to guide the development of its direct and indirect reuse activities. The plan will determine the most efficient way to reuse this valuable water resource.

Safety of Reclaimed Water

Monitoring and testing are routinely performed to ensure the quality of reclaimed water is compliant with all safety regulations established by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) and the Maricopa County Environmental Services Department. While reclaimed water is not intended for drinkingor swimming, it is completely safe to use for irrigation in parks and common areas. The water is treated to the highest quality criteria established by ADEQ so that contact or accidental ingestion poses no significant concern for humans or animals.
