Summer Conservation Campaign

The hot summer is now upon us! Look to your City of Peoria Water Conservation Office and the Valley’s "Water, Use It Wisely" program to receive information on how to lower your summer water bills.

What is Xeriscape?

This term comes from the Greek word xeros, which means dry, and refers to the seven horticultural principles that help to ensure that landscapes, wherever they are located, reflect a sensitivity to the local environment and its climate. In the Sonoran desert, Xeriscape refers to creative landscaping that conserves water, uses desert adapted plants, and protects the environment. Xeriscape landscaping incorporates seven basic principles which lead to saving water: planning and design, soil analysis, practical turf areas, appropriate plant selection, efficient irrigation, use of mulches, and appropriate maintenance.

Free Xeriscape Classes

Free bi-monthly Xeriscape landscaping classes are scheduled in the evenings at the Main Library or Council Chambers at the City Hall complex. Class flyers are e-mailed or mailed out to interested customers and are available at the libraries, City Hall, Peoria nurseries, garden centers. View a current list of available classes given by recognized professionals in horticulture at conserve.peoriaaz.gov where you can also register online. You may also obtain information and register by calling 623-773-7286.

Landscaping Literature

Look for Xeriscape landscaping literature available at Peoria nurseries and garden centers, Peoria Libraries and the City Hall Complex.

Interested in saving $100?

To help our customers in the quest to conserve water, the City of Peoria Water Conservation Office is planning to implement a rebate program should it be approved by our City Council in early June. The two potential rebates will be available for application July 1, 2003.

The installation of a Xeriscape landscape may earn you a $100 credit on your Utilities bill if you are a City of Peoria water customer. The installation of a hot water recirculator may earn you a $100 rebate on your Utility bill if you are a City of Peoria water or sewer customer.

To find out more about our Xeriscape landscaping and hot water recirculator rebates, log onto conserve.peoriaaz.gov or call 623-773-7286.
