Water Quality Data
Definitions and Abbreviations:
Sample dates reflect the most recent required sample. Most samples are required every three years.
< : less than
C/100 ml: colonies per 100
milliliters
Gr/gal: Grains Per Gallon: Water
hardness measure
EPA: United States Environmental
Protection Agency
MCL: Maximum Contaminant Level: The
highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCL’s are set as close to the MCLGs as
feasible using the best available treatment technology
MCLG: Maximum Contaminant Level
Goal: The level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is no known or expected risk to health.
MCLG’s allow for a margin of safety
MRDL: Maximum residual disinfectant
level goal means the level of a drinking water disinfectant below which there is no known or expected risk to
health. MRDLGs do not reflect the benefits of the use of disinfectants to control microbial
contaminants.
NA: not applicable
ND: none detected
NR: not required
NTU - Nephelometric Turbidity Unit:
measure of how light is scattered by particulate matter in water
SD: single detect
pCi/L - pico-Curies per Liter: a
measure of radioactivity
mg/L (milligrams per liter): Unit
of measure equal to parts per million (PPM). 1 mg/L (or 1 PPM) is roughly equivalent to one penny in $10,000
µg/L (micrograms per liter): Unit
of measure equal to parts per billion (PPB). 1 µg/L (or 1 PPB) is roughly equivalent to one penny in $10,000,000
2002 & 2003 Violations
In 2002, the City of Peoria notified Maricopa County Environmental Services Department that after a
review of the City’s water quality data, that the
water system failed to obtain some of the required number of samples on the prescribed schedule for
Regulated Volatile Organic Compounds
(VOC) in 2001. This failure to monitor regulated drinking water contaminants is in violation of the Safe
Drinking Water Rules. The City has
collected the required VOC samples to address this issue. Laboratory results are complete and no
detection of VOCs was found. In 2003, the City
found that monitoring at one location after a detection of VOCs in the 4th quarter of 2002 did not
increase as required. Sampling completed in the
first quarter 2003 indicated no detection of VOCs at this same location. The City of Peoria will
continue monitoring VOCs at this location per
regulations.
Public water systems are required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Arizona Department
of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), and
the Maricopa County Environmental Services Department to monitor the drinking water for Regulated
Volatile Organic Compounds. Analysis of
samples from eight wells that were collected during the above time periods were within the guidelines
for safe drinking water established by EPA
and ADEQ.
