Wastewater Division
The Wastewater Collection System

Sanitary waste material, consisting of water borne solids from our homes and businesses, must be transported to a treatment facility. Most waste streams flow by gravity but, due to unfavorable elevation differences, these streams must occasionally be pumped. These pumping stations are referred to as lift stations. Gravity flows within the collection system are maintained near 2 feet per second. This velocity maintains solids in suspension so they do not become deposited on the bottom and sides of the piping system.

Collection system piping is usually found below the surface, under our roads and streets. Access openings, known as manholes, are provided periodically along the system. These manholes are also found where pipes join together or change direction. By utilizing these access points, inspection, maintenance, and sampling of the underground piping system is possible.

Cleaning the collection system piping network is scheduled and performed regularly. Truck mounted water jets use a forceful spray of water to clean and flush solids accumulations from the pipes. A small television camera may be moved through the collection system to allow inspection of internal conditions. Manholes are regularly treated to ensure insects and other pests do not become a problem.

The collection system is given little thought since it is out of sight and trouble free. When a problem does occur it reminds us of the importance of this vital system

The pipes that are within our homes and yards seldom cause a problem but if they should they are the home or business owners responsibility.

The collection system can be an extremely hazardous area. City Code is strictly enforced to protect the collection system and ensure everyone’s safety. The collection system service, inspection, and repairs are strictly for the trained professionals. Please refrain from any contact.
