Water Conservation Tips

Water Conservation Home

All Peoria citizens must do their part to use water wisely to ensure an adequate water supply for today and future generations. Water conservation not only will help you save our precious water resources; it will also help you save money.

The following tips can help you do your part to conserve this precious resource:

OUTDOORS

  • Check your irrigation system for leaks often
  • Use low water use plants and the principles of Xeriscape
  • Adjust irrigation schedule to accommodate seasonal water demand
  • Adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered and not the house, sidewalk, or street
  • Water at night or during the cool morning hours to minimize evaporation
  • Investigate the addition of electric sprinkler timers

INDOORS

  • Check pipes, faucets, and toilets for leaks
  • Run your washing machine and dishwasher only when they are full and you could save 1000 gallons a month
  • Replace standard shower heads with low-flow heads
  • Investigate the replacement of standard plumbing fixtures with low water use fixtures
  • Keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap for cold drinks, so that every drop goes down you, not the drain
  • If your shower can fill a one-gallon bucket in less than 20 seconds, then replace it with a water-efficient showerhead
  • Time your shower to keep it under 5 minutes. You'll save up to 1000 gallons a month
  • Install low-volume toilets
  • Put food coloring in your toilet tank. If it seeps into the toilet bowl, you have a leak. It's easy to fix, and you can save more than 500 gallons a month
  • Plug the bathtub before turning the water on, then adjust the temperatures as the tub fills up
  • Don't use running water to thaw food
  • Grab a wrench and fix that leaky faucet. It's simple, inexpensive, and can save 140 gallons a week
  • Drop that tissue in the trash instead of flushing it and save gallons every time
  • Choose new water-saving appliances, like washing machines that save up to 20 gallons per load
  • Turn off the water while you shave or brush your teeth and you can save more than 100 gallons a week
  • While staying in a hotel or even at home, consider reusing your towels
