J.P. de la Montaigne Spring Training Wrap-up The 14th Spring Training season kicked off with fabulous weather this year for the Peoria Sports Complex. And the beautiful sunny skies and warm temperatures held on for most of the season. Only one day of rain darkened the skies for the Peoria Major League baseball teams – Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres – and even with the gloom and hail, we were able to get the game in through 5 innings. The attendance figures topped last season numbers in Peoria and for the Cactus League as a whole. It seems that fans were very excited to once again come out and soak up rays in the Valley of the Sun and the City of Peoria. If you didn’t make it to a game this year, make sure to put it on your calendar for next March – nothing beats baseball in the sunny springtime at the Peoria Sports Complex!
Super Series The unique setup at the Peoria Sports Complex is ideal for adult, college, high school and youth baseball tournaments and championships. We are again proud to host the Super Series Baseball 2007 Summer National Championships. This year, we will play host to the following divisions: 13 year old 60/90 and 16 year old National Division from June 30 to July 7 and 14 year old 60/90 American and National Divisions from July 7 to July 14. Each division is comprised of teams from across the nation competing for the esteem of being the National Champion. Come out and join us for a game! For more information on location, game times and nearby places of interest, visit our website at http://www.peoriaaz.gov/sportscomplex/sportscomplex_main.asp.
Recreation Center Grand Opening We are excited to say that the Rio Vista Recreation Center will be open later this summer! Come sign up for a monthly or year-long pass-holder package and visit us as much as you’d like during that time frame. If you aren’t ready to commit, come in and purchase a day pass and once you see all the great amenities in action – bouldering/rock wall, indoor basketball courts, racquetball courts, over-gym running track, state of the art fitness equipment and more – you wont be able to sign up fast enough! For more up-to-the-minute information, visit our department website at http://recreation.peoriaaz.gov.
Library The summers may be hot in Arizona, but the library is the ‘cool’ place to be for people of all ages. Once again the library will be hosting three super summer reading programs. Read Your Way to the Ball Park is always a ‘hit’ with children as will be this year’s teen program, You Never Know @ Your Library. Adults can enjoy a little friendly non-competitive “competition” by participating in Sleuthing in the Stacks. Each of the programs offers great prizes and drawings for reading a certain amount of books. They run from the end of May through late July and it’s never too late to join!
