TRAFFIC SERVICES SECTION
The Traffic Services Section of the Peoria Police
Department is comprised of one motorcycle sergeant,
six daytime motorcycle enforcement officers, two
nighttime DUI motorcycle officers, one commercial motor
vehicle inspector, one police services officer,
and one vehicle impoundment hearing officer.

The Traffic Services Section is responsible for various traffic functions including: the investigation of traffic collisions (including serious and fatal collisions), responding to traffic complaints, collision reduction enforcement,
school zone enforcement, DUI investigation/enforcement, commercial vehicle inspections, and traffic collision analysis.
During 2005, the Traffic Services Section spent 2,421 hours enforcing traffic laws on high collision roadways. Traffic officers spent an additional
363 hours enforcing traffic laws in school zones and
553 hours of enforcement in areas citizens believe to be of concern. Overall, enforcement by the Traffic Services Section resulted in
9000 citations being issued during 2005.

Most of the Peoria Police Department’s DUI arrests are made by officers of the Traffic Services Section. The current
six daytime motorcycle officers and the commercial motor vehicle inspector often adjust their work hours to assist the two nighttime motorcycle officers. This is done to help enforce impaired driver laws. There were
904 people arrested for driving while impaired in the City of Peoria in 2005.

During 2005, the commercial motor vehicle inspector stopped and inspected 389 commercial motor vehicles. As a result of these inspections,
5,712 violations were discovered, 3,411 were considered hazardous violations and
2,301 were non-hazardous violations. One hundred
and sixty-three (242) trucks were found to be a hazard to public safety and were placed “Out-of-Service.”
