Peoria Officer recognized by Sun City Elk’s Lodge
#2559 Honored for his actions in rescuing a fellow officer Peoria Police Officer Jason Smith was honored by the Sun City Elk’s Lodge #2559 during a ceremony held on October 16 for his actions in rescuing a fellow officer. On December 17, 2005, Officer Jason Smith had been a Peoria Police officer for 9 months when he found himself in the middle of a shootout with a homicide suspect, something most officers never experience in their careers. During the gun battle, Officer Smith heard a fellow officer cry out for help and noticed Officer Bill Weigt on the ground. While shots were still being fired by the suspect and with little concern for his own safety, Officer Smith ran to Officer Weigt. Officer Smith realized Officer Weigt was still in danger so he pulled Officer Weigt out of harms way to the cover of a police car and then laid on top of Officer Weigt to protect him until the shooting stopped. Officer Smith then assisted in loading Officer Weigt in to the back of a pick-up truck and removed him from the scene and to medical attention. Officer Smith’s selfless act of bravery helped ensure that Officer Weigt did not receive additional injuries during the incident. |
