PEORIA POLICE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES KEY PROMOTIONS;
NEW SERGEANTS TO TAKE OATH OF OFFICE

Peoria Police Chief David Leonardo this week announced the promotion of five veteran officers to the rank of Sergeant.

Officer Bruce Walls will be promoted to the rank of Sergeant, assigned to the Patrol Services Bureau. Sergeant Walls has been with the Peoria Police Department since August, 2001. During the last four years, he has shown exceptional leadership skills as an officer, detective and training officer both here in Peoria and at the Arizona Law Enforcement Academy.

Officer Luis Aponte is also promoted to the rank of Sergeant, assigned as a Patrol Services Bureau supervisor. Sergeant Aponte was hired as a patrol officer in March, 2001. He was later appointed as a detective in the Criminal Investigations Bureau, Street Crimes Unit. Sergeant Aponte’s work has been recognized with several awards, including a Life Saving Award, which was presented in 2002.

Officer Charles Bezio is promoted to the rank of Sergeant, temporarily assigned as the supervisor for the Criminal Investigations Bureau, Property Crimes Unit. Sergeant Bezio was hired as an officer in December, 1996. Since that time, Sergeant Bezio has worked as a patrol officer, field training officer and detective. His efforts in the Property Crimes Unit were instrumental in the development and implementation of the Department’s Bait Car Program.

Sergeants Walls, Aponte and Bezio will be sworn in during a ceremony at 2pm on Wednesday, August 24, 2005. That ceremony is open to the public and members of the media. Please contact Public Information Officer Shelly Watkins if you plan on attending.
