Two weekend crashes leave 2 year old dead
and a 38 year old fighting for his life
Two motor vehicle crashes that occurred on Saturday July 29 have
left a 2 year old dead and a 38 year old fighting for his life.
The first incident occurred at 11:10 AM when 2 ½ year old Ciciley
Caberra was killed after she was run over by her great grand father,
58 year old Ben Ledesma in the driveway of the family home in the
11500 block of North 80th Drive. Mr. Ledesma was working on the
house when he started to pull his pick-up truck forward out of the
driveway. That is when Ciciley ran from the house alongside the
passenger side of the truck, crosses in front of it and was run over
by the driver’s side wheels. Ciciley was treated at the scene,
transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital and was pronounced dead at
12:05 PM. There does not appear to be any violations involved in
this incident and it appears to be a very tragic accident. This
incident is a strong reminder that constant eye to eye supervision
is the only way we can keep our kids safe. They can move from one
spot to another very quickly and quietly and in this case there was
no way the driver could have seen the victim due to her size.
The second collision took place at 3:50 PM at 7100 Grand Avenue. A
Daewoo being driven by 38 year old John Ivan Duncan of Peoria was
southbound on 71st Avenue when he failed to stop at the stop sign at
Grand Avenue. He was struck on the driver’s side by a Kia van driven
by 37 year old Fredia Pewitt from Surprise. Duncan was transported
to the hospital with life threatening injuries and Pewitt was
transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Peoria Traffic
investigators are still investigating this collision to determine if
alcohol was involved.
