On Thursday June 29 at about 5:30 PM Gary Lee Hatfield was arrested by the Phoenix Police Department’s Special Assignments Unit after a 5 hours stand-off at 38th Street and Sweetwater. Hatfield had been on the run since abducting 5 year old Zachary Scott from the victim’s mother’s home in Peoria on June 22. He was located by the Peoria Police Department’s Family Crimes Unit detectives after receiving several tips and they asked Phoenix officers for assistance. After confirming Hatfield was in the residence the Phoenix SAU team entered the house. Hatfield went into the attic of the house taking Zachary with him and they were in the attic for about 2 hours during the heat of the day. They exited the attic and when the opportunity was available Hatfield was shot twice with SAGE rounds, a less lethal weapon system similar to stun bags, and he was taken into custody. At the time of his arrest Hatfield was holding Zachary in front of him and had a hand gun in his waist band.

Hatfield was transported to John C. Lincoln Hospital and after treatment was booked into the 4th Avenue Jail on the charges listed above.

Zachary was transported to a hospital to be checked out and turned over to the custody of Child Protective Services.
