PEORIA POLICE DEPARTMENT
ANNOUNCES
CIVILIAN PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER (PIO) SELECTION
The Peoria Police
Department recently completed its selection process for a newly
created civilian PIO position. In the past, this position was
assigned to a police sergeant. The Department proudly announces the
hiring of veteran newsperson Shelly Watkins to fill this critical
position.
Shelly is a graduate of Scottsdale’s Coronado High School, and
attended ASU and NAU, graduating with a BS degree in broadcast
communication from NAU in 1989. From there, she began her media
career first with KMGN radio in Flagstaff, reporting local morning
news. She moved over to television news, and was employed as a
reporter, anchor, news director and station manager for KNAZ, also
in Flagstaff, for ten (10) years. During that time Shelly spent five
(5) years reporting on police and the courts, so she has a strong
working knowledge of police work. She was also an adjunct faculty
member at NAU during her tenure in the Flagstaff area, and
instructed senior broadcasting students. Her broadcasting career
took her to California, where she continued to work in the news
business in Los Angeles and San Jose. She returned to the Valley in
2004 and took a position as a news writer and producer for KNXV
Channel 15 before joining us in late March.
Deputy Chief Karen Ashley, who oversees the PIO function, said “We
are very lucky to have someone with Shelly’s experience and
credentials handling Department-related media issues. She is a fine
addition to our organization.”
