Seat belts not worn in two recent fatal crashes, wearing them may have saved their lives! There have been two motor vehicles crashes in the past two weeks on a half mile stretch of 75th Avenue that have killed two young men. On February 16th a one vehicle crash took the life of 19 year old Jake W. Liber in the 11900 Block of North 75th Avenue when he lost control of his pick-up truck and struck a block wall. On March 4th, 20 year old Robert “Chris” Miller was killed in a three vehicle collision at 75th Avenue and Cholla Street when the car he was riding in was hit by another car that was north bound on 75th Avenue and failed to stop of the red light. In both of the crashes the two young men were not wearing seat belts. While the wearing of a seat belt does not mean you will not suffer serious injuries or death it does improve your chances of not suffering serious injury or death by 50%. Studies have also shown that traditionally teen and young adult males have the lowest self reported seat belt usage of any age group. The Peoria Police Department wants to use these tragic incidents to remind everyone of the importance of wearing their seat belt on every trip, making sure children under 40 pounds are in car seats and that youth 4”9” and smaller are in booster seats. A simple “click” can be the difference between life and death. ### |
