Motorized Play Vehicles can be dangerous
Use may be illegal

Since the holidays we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of kids using motorized play vehicles (MPV) on city streets. A Motorized Play Vehicle is any coaster, skateboard, scooter or other motorized vehicle that is self propelled by a motor and which is not defined in Arizona Revised Statute, Title 28 as a motor driven cycle, motorized wheelchair or motor vehicle.

To ensure they are being used in a legal manner the Peoria Police Department is providing the following reminders which are directly out of the Peoria City Code:

• All traffic laws apply to MPV’s and non-motorized scooters.

• MPV’s and non-motorized scooters must yield the right of way to pedestrian traffic.

• Motorized scooters (MPV) must be equipped with:

- A lamp emitting a white light visible 300 feet to the front and the sides of the MPV.

- A red reflector visible from 500 feet to the rear.

- A white or yellow reflector on each side visible from 200 feet away.

- A brake that will enable the operator to make braked wheel skid on dry, level, clean pavement.

• Anyone under the age of 18 must wear a helmet when operating a MPV.

• "Parents, guardians and legal custodians shall not authorize or permit a minor to violate state law or Peoria City Code relating to MPV’s.

• MPV’s may not be operated between the hours of sundown and 8:00 a.m.

• You can not carry passengers on a MPV.

• High performance exhaust, filter and carburetor kits are prohibited. All MPV’s must have a muffler installed to reduce engine noise.

• It is unlawful to operate a MPV under the influence of an alcoholic beverage or any drug.

• It is unlawful to operate a MPV on any sidewalk or any park within the City of Peoria.

• MPV’s are prohibited on public streets with four or more marked traffic lanes or having a speed limit established greater than thirty (30) miles per hour.

• MPV’s can not be operated on any private property unless the owner of the property has given permission.
