Peoria Hires New Public Safety PIO
The city seeks to leverage the departments' strong community focus, selecting a candidate with a strong media background was a top priority.
6/18/2012
The Peoria Police and Fire Departments are pleased to announce the hiring of
Amanda Hernandez, for the role of Public Safety/Public Information Officer for
both departments. Hernandez is filling the position which was made vacant by the
retirement of long-time PIO Mike Tellef in 2011. Neighborhood Services Manager,
Jay Davies had been the interim PIO until a replacement was hired.
Hernandez, a Valley native, is an award winning reporter with nearly a decade of
reporting experience. After graduating from Northern Arizona University, she
started her career in Flagstaff, covering everything from record snowfall to the
Rodeo-Chediski, one of the state's largest wildfires. Most recently, Hernandez
was a reporter for KPHO-TV in Phoenix.
In addition to her strong local media ties, Hernandez's experience with online
content and social media management skills will be critical as she takes on the
oversight of the departments social media programs and web based communication
programs, which enhance communication and transparency with the community on day
to day events and situations.
Having Hernandez serve both Police and Fire Departments will be a tremendous
benefit to the city, as well as to our media partners. This role will provide a
single point of contact on Peoria police and fire emergency situations.
Hernandez will start with the city on June 25, and will fully transition into
her role by mid-July. Her contact information will be shared at that time. In
the meantime, media will continue using the policepio@peoriaaz.gov and firepio@peoriaaz.gov.
