Building Peoria through Capital Improvement Projects
City working hard to rehabilitate existing properties, which in turn will attract new businesses and patrons into existing areas of the city that are in need of transformation.

PEORIA, Ariz. (January 9, 2012) – – The Economic Development Services
department of the city of Peoria is focused on attracting state-of-the art
industries and high-tech jobs. Building “new” is not all the department strives
to accomplish. They also work hard to rehabilitate existing properties, which in
turn will attract new businesses and patrons into existing areas of the city
that are in need of transformation. An example of this effort is underway with
the new rehabilitation program for commercial buildings in the Old Town District
of Peoria.
The Old Town Commercial Rehabilitation Program is designed to promote and assist
in the improvement of targeted Old Town commercial properties through exterior
rehabilitation of building facades and related site improvements. Adopted in
October 2010, the city’s goal is to use the program as a tool to revitalize the
commercial district and reinvigorate private investment in these properties.
The first phase of the program targets the rehabilitation of Wagoner Plaza 1,
which is on the southeast corner of Peoria and 85th Avenues, adjacent to the
Center for the Performing Arts. The proposed improvements for Phase 1 include
façade treatments, site and landscaping enhancements and plaza signage. These
revitalization efforts will help to promote commercial redevelopment activities,
improve the aesthetics of Old Town, and enhance the sense of civic pride for
Peoria residents.
The contractor, Caliente Construction, will soon begin the first stage of
construction activities, and anticipates the completion of all the improvements
for the plaza in April 2012.
Some of the design parameters and elements that this project incorporates
include the following:
• Contemporary Design Influence from the Performing Arts Theatre
• Enhancement of Building Frontage to Provide Openness
• Adjusted Roofline Articulation
• Expanded Sidewalk Area where possible
• Sign Monuments and Landscaping at Corners
• Landscape/Hardscape Improvements
