Kevin Johnson and Michael Crow are Keynote Speakers for
Peoria’s 2nd Annual PACE Conference
PEORIA, Ariz. (September 7, 2011) –Former Phoenix Suns basketball star, now
Mayor of Sacramento, Kevin Johnson and ASU President, Dr. Michael Crow are the
keynote speakers for the city of Peoria’s 2011 PACE Conference being held at the
Arizona Broadway Theatre in Peoria on Thursday, November 17. The event, Positive
Action thru Civic Engagement, or PACE, is an initiative that promotes informed
decision making through authentic and intentional dialogue.
The event features moderated panel discussions and audience participation. The
topics include: Enhancing Education through Civic Engagement, Community Action,
and Business & Community Engagement: A Two-Way Street.
The confirmed panelists for this year’s PACE Conference are Eddie Basha, founder
of Bashas’ Grocery Stores, Dr. Ángel Cabrera, President, Thunderbird School of
Global Management, Ernest Calderón, President Emeritus, Arizona Board of
Regents, Dr. Catherine R. Eden, Director of Executive Education, ASU School of
Public Affairs, Lisa Graham Keegan, CEO, Education Breakthrough Network, Roy
Minter, Police Chief, City of Peoria, Dr. Denton Santarelli, Superintendent,
Peoria Unified School District, Steve Seleznow, CEO, Arizona Community
Foundation, James Svara, Professor, ASU Public Affairs, Gena Trimble, Associate
General Manager Marketing, SRP and Scott Whyte, Economic Development Director,
City of Peoria.
The 2011 PACE Conference is designed to explore best practices in how education,
the public and businesses can work together and get involved in their community
and government. The event is open to the public with content to attract leaders
within the business, education and government communities, as well as elected
officials, citizens wishing to be more involved and anyone seeking to stay
engaged in their community.
The introductory keynote presenter is Dr. Michael M. Crow, who became the 16th
president of Arizona State University in 2002. Under his direction the
university pursues teaching research and creative excellence focused on the
major challenges and questions of our time as well as those central to the
building of a sustainable environment and economy for Arizona. He has committed
the university to global engagement and to setting a new standard for public
service.
The closing keynote speaker for the conference is Mayor Kevin “KJ” Johnson. Upon
retiring from the NBA after 12 seasons with the Phoenix Suns in 2000, he was
elected mayor of Sacramento in November 2008. He has made civic engagement a top
priority and is a tireless advocate for strengthening volunteer service efforts
in Sacramento. During the first two years of his administration, Johnson
accomplished a number of objectives in his ambitious plan to ensure that all
Sacramento citizens have a meaningful opportunity to serve and is recognized
nationally for his efforts.
