–Peoria Parks and
Recreation Senior Adult Program drove a group of 13 senior citizens from Peoria
and Sun City, Arizona, to Mesa on Friday, July 29, for a hands-on tour of the
Banner Simulation Medical Center. The group included a retired nurse, Catherine
Reed, and a nurse educator, Janet Dudley, who were amazed at the capabilities of
the 55,000-square-foot virtual hospital, which has about 75 training mannequins,
and an Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric/Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit, Operating Room, Labor & Delivery rooms, and a Medical/Surgical Unit.
As part of the tour, the seniors, ranging in age from 55 to
80, learned how to respond to a Code Blue, observed an IV insertion, delivered a
baby and learned wound care. Every nurse hired by Banner in Arizona spends two
to five days at the Banner Simulation Medical Center to learn Banner policies
and procedure and hone their skills. About 1,200 Banner nurses go through the
center each year as part of their new employee orientation.
