Council Highlights


January

  • Authorized city officials to buy property on Union Hills Drive for reconstruction of the interchange at Union Hills and Loop 101.

  • Approved nearly $6 million in mid-year cuts to the Fiscal Year 2009 city budget. The reductions didn’t reduce “core” services or require layoffs.

  • Awarded a $230,000 contract for detailed data required to create a land-use plan for the area around Lake Pleasant Parkway and Loop 303.

  • Approved contracts totaling almost $9.7 million related to expansion of the Municipal Court building on the Peoria Municipal Campus. The project will more than double the space available to the court and reorient the main entrance to the 83rd Avenue side of the building. Construction is scheduled through February 2011. The court will remain open during construction.

  • Ordered the sale of $68.4 million in general obligation bonds to pay for various projects in the city’s Fiscal Year 2009 Capital Improvement Plan. The projects were approved by the City Council in June 2008 and by voters in 2000 and 2005 referenda. The $68.4 million comprises $47 million for street projects, almost $6 million for the Municipal Court expansion, $14 million for storm drainage and $1.2 million for parks and trails.

February

  • Appropriated $1.2 million for emergency sewer-line repairs at the intersection of 91st and Northern avenues.

  • Designated the Peoria Central School, located at the northwest corner of 83rd Avenue and Madison Street, a Peoria Local Historic Landmark. It will be listed on the Peoria Register of Historic Places and have Historic Preservation Overlay Zoning.

  • Approved a $1.8 million contract with MGC Contractors Inc. to make improvements at the Beardsley Water Reclamation Facility.

  • Approved a $68,000 contract with J. Banicki Construction Inc. to modify the median of Westbrook Parkway at 91st Lane as part of Peoria’s Community Works program, which pays for locally beneficial projects that are not part of the city’s Capital Improvement Program.

  • March

  • Designated the Peoria Woman’s Club, located at the southeast corner of 84th Avenue and Jefferson Street, a Peoria Local Historic Landmark. It will be listed on the Peoria Register of Historic Places and have Historic Preservation Overlay Zoning.

  • Accepted $394,800 from the federal Department of Homeland Security to pay 80 percent of the cost for the Fire Department to upgrade the Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus worn by firefighters in smoky or potentially toxic environments.

  • Accepted $25,000 from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety for the Police Department to improve speed and traffic enforcement. During the grant period,
    Peoria Police will host a West Valley speed-enforcement task force and offer two training courses.
