Updated Branch Library Design Plan David Hunenberg said that the plan for the new branch library is in the final stages of the “design and development phase.” David explained that a “Lake Pleasant theme” is being incorporated into parts of the building as the branch is situated in North Peoria, not far from the Lake. The design team designed a sort of “port hole” configuration into windows in the Youth area where children can sit in the port hole and read. The roof line appears as waves. The building has great flexibility including “roll up garage door openings” to accommodate library programs when necessary. Plans were available for board members to review. The target date for opening remains January of 2009. REPORT FROM THE LIBRARY BRANCH MANAGER: 1. Staffing update David Hunenberg reported that the Main Library recently received a letter of resignation from Library Assistant Karen Yoxall. Her husband is retiring and she has decided to join him in retirement. Interviews to fill Karen’s position will be held next week. Recruitment is in progress for the new Library Clerk position at Sunrise Mountain Branch. There is a page vacancy at SML as Eric Lewis is moving on to college. 2. Friends of the Library update Eileen Beattie is doing a great job as the Friends President. She is helping to develop some really great fundraising ideas for the future branch. The Friends have built their treasury to $50,000 and have a goal to raise $50,000 more. They have a theme of “Sail into the Future with the Friends”. Membership continues to grow, and they have plans to raffle autographed books each month. 3. Summer Reading Programs Summer Reading sign-ups for children are going really well. The branch already has over 1200 children participating. Library staff continues to publicize the teen program “You Never Know, at Your Library.” The Adult program “Sleuthing in the Stacks” has adults signing up to read and participate in weekly prize drawings for gift cards and coupons. All three reading programs run through July 28th. 4. Update on Grants The Library recently received a $1000 grant from Wal-Mart to purchase Teen Materials for the Main Library. The State Library awarded $7000 in grant funding to purchase self check conversion workstations. Grant funding was declined for the purchase of RFID tags for Library Materials and a new request will be submitted again next year for equipment. 5. Teen Art Contest The success of the Teen Art Contest last fall encouraged staff to repeat the program again this fall. Andre Licardi who formerly worked for PUSD, and is now employed by the City offered advice on categorizing the art, displaying the entries, judging and how to award prizes. Library staff looks forward to a really great show again this year during Teen Read Week in October.
