CITY OF PEORIA, ARIZONA LIBRARY BOARD MEETING Main Library January 14, 2008 A meeting of the Library Board of the City of Peoria, Arizona was convened in open and public session at the Main Library, 8463 West Monroe Street in Peoria at 7:00 p.m. Members Present: Members, Shirley Berow, Joan Leone, Rhona Cohensitt, Alicia Snarr, Steve Poe, and Barry Spiegel. Member Emeritus: 0 Other Municipal Officials Present: David Hunenberg, Branch Librarian, and Lynn Lindell, Administrative Assistant. Audience: 0 CONSENT AGENDA: A motion was made by Steve Poe, seconded by Barry Spiegel and upon vote, carried unanimously to approve the Consent Agenda (the absences of Joan Leone and Ed Comtois, and minutes of the November 5, 2007 meeting of the board.) REGULAR AGENDA: NEW BUSINESS: 1. Discussion of updates to the Collection Development Policy David Hunenberg, Branch Librarian reviewed the Collection Development Policy with the Board and pointed out proposed revisions to the policy. Board members proposed a few minor additions to the policy. Rhona Cohensitt made a motion, seconded by Barry Spiegel and upon vote carried unanimously to approve the revised Collection Development Policy. CALL TO THE PUBLIC: (Non-Agenda Items) Reports from Staff: 1. Staffing update David Hunenberg gave this update and said that both libraries are now fully staffed. He said that Tonya Stuempfl was selected to fill the part time Librarian vacancy at the Main Library. She was previously employed by the City of Mesa Library. Tonya will focus on developing teen programs and activities. She has already begun to work on a Teen Photo Contest, which will announce winners on the day of Library Fest. 2. Friends of the Library update David Hunenberg reported that the Friends group recently lost their President. Eileen Beattie passed away on the 31st of December. The board will be regrouping and searching for a president. Eileen had many goals and ambitions for the group and they hope to carry on with her plans for the future. 3. Library Fest 2008 The annual Library Fest event will coincide with the City Celebration of the Arts Festival on the weekend of March 15th. The library event will be held on Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm. Plans include lots of kids programs with a magician, ventriloquist, Reptile Adventures, the Bead Museum and tattoos and fortune telling. Francine Matthews, a well known adult author will visit, and the Friends group will have their Spring Mega Book sale and Parisian Flea Market. The teen Photo Contest will announce winners at a reception. Board members were encouraged to attend this event. 4. LSTA Grant 2008 With libraries changing and focusing on technology, reference services are changing and taking on a new role. Adult computer classes are growing in popularity. Staff will submit a grant proposal, “2008 a SPACE ODYSSEY”. The Grant will propose funding to make use of space vacated in moving the Reference Collection. A new Computer Lab in the Adult Services area of the Main Library will better facilitate the increasingly popular computer classes and offer a quiet area for work and study. REPORT FROM THE BOARD: Rhona Cohensitt asked why the Ready, Set, Read program targets first graders for Library Card sign-ups. David Hunenberg responded that this age was determined to be the appropriate age to target. She asked that Kindergarteners be considered for this program. David said that he is proposing a new “Monkey See, Monkey Do” theme for summer to get both children and parents to sign up for summer reading programs together. Joan Leone presented an article about Teens being drawn to the library because of the computers and games that are offered there. Steve Poe asked if there is any further word on filling the Library Manager position. David said he has a meeting tomorrow with J.P. de la Montaigne and Deputy City Manager, Carl Swenson. The Board asked to be kept informed about this. The next meeting was set for Monday, April 7, at 7:00 p.m. at Sunrise Mountain Library. ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business to come before the board, Steve Poe made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Rhona Cohensitt seconded the motion.
