CITY OF PEORIA, ARIZONA ACACIA ROOM November 13, 2007 A Regular Meeting of the Arts Commission of the City of Peoria, Arizona, was convened at 8401 W. Monroe Street at 5:14 p.m. Members Present: John Buonagurio, Virginia Wordsman, Linda Balance, Marsha Hanson, Dorthea Crooks, Jane Brown Members Absent: Maureen Flanigan Other Municipal Officials Present: Suzanne Stewart, Executive Assistant, Andre Licardi, Arts Officer, Grady Miller, Liaison Disposition of Absence(s): 1C Approve the absence of Dorthea Crooks, Jane Brown and Marsha Hanson from the regular meeting held on September 11, 2007. Minutes: 2C Approve Regular Meeting Minutes of September 11, 2007: A motion was made by Commissioner Buonagurio to approve the minutes as written; the motion was seconded by Commissioner Hanson. The minutes of the regular meeting of September 11, 2007 were approved unanimously. Note: The order in which the items appear in the minutes is not necessarily the order in which they were discussed at the meeting. New Business: 3R Dedication of Ann LaRose’s Sculpture Mr. Licardi informed the Commissioners that he was handling the installation of the sculpture which is to be set in the west garden area in front of City Hall. There will be a dedication on December 6, 2008 and it will be titled “Leading the Way”. The artist and her husband will be in attendance for the dedication. 4R PUSD Faculty Exhibit at the Ards Art Center Mr. Licardi discussed the art show that was displayed in Ards, Ireland by the faculty of Peoria Unified School District. Artists were selected by the West Valley Art Museum. Mr. Licardi organized and attended the show in Ards. She showed the commissioners a presentation of the show, location and reception. Per Mr. Licardi the art was very well received. Mr. Miller mentioned to the commission that we had a show at our Sister City several years ago and it was well received as well. 5R Guidelines for Traveling Exhibits and Artist Exhanges Mr. Licardi distributed guidelines for the Sister Cities Art Partnership. This will be aiding the program by providing some guidance and structure. Mr. Licardi is already checking the calendar to see when artists will be arriving in the states or going abroad. Commissioner Ballance suggested coordinating some of the visiting artist’s trips with events at the Peoria Performing Arts Theater Commissioner Hanson made a motion to approve the guidelines for the Sister Cities Art Partnership, Commissioner Wordsman seconded the motion which passed unanimously. 6R ASU Photography Exhibit to Ards Arts Centre Mr. Miller distributed a catalog representing a photography collection that was displayed in Newtownards this past September. The photography was originally displayed at Arizona State University and it depicts a collection of native Arizona Indians that were discovered. Mr. Miller remarked that it was a nice connection between our Sister City and Arizona. 7R Community Cultural Assessment, Arts Survey and Cultural Arts Plan Mr. Miller let the commissioners know that the Cultural Arts Assessment by Nancy Dallett is 90% complete. Mr. Licardi informed the commissioners that the survey compiled by Mr. Ed Sloat will be distributed to the public via telephone which will be conducted by ASU. This survey will contain large quantities of information that will be helpful with the Arts General Plan. 8R 2008 Celebration of Artists Mr. Licardi provided the draft of the invitation letter as well as a schedule for important dates for the Celebration of Artists as well as a roster of invitees. Mr. Licardi presented the commission with the suggestion of cash rewards this year. Mr. Miller and Mr. Licardi with meet with the City Attorney’s Office to go over the details of cash rewards for the entries. Commissioner Hanson asked if the cash entry fee would make a negative impact on the amount of entries we receive this year. Mr. Licardi reminded the commissioners that there would be a $1500 award presented for the Best of Show and that would spark some interest in the community. Commissioner Wordsman agreed and said that a cash award would help recruit serious artists in the valley. Mr. Miller would like the award checks available for the reception so they can be presented to the artists. There was some discussion about categories this year and the possibility of condensing them. There was also some discussion regarding giclees and if they would be allowed in the show this year. Mr. Licardi clarified that giclees would be considered a print and the show did not have a printmaking category, so they would not be accepted. Commissioner Crooks asked if enhanced photography would be allowed in the show and Mr. Licardi stated that if the original photograph was taken by the artist, enhancement and manipulation would be accepted as it would still be considered an original. Mr. Licardi suggested that the Sister City Visiting Artists be considered as judges for the show this year. CALL TO THE PUBLIC: No public attended this meeting. Reports from Staff: 1. Mr. Miller stated that there was vandalism to the light near the statue situated by the library. It will be replaced early in 2008. 2. Mr. Miller informed the commissioners that the Chamber Music West will have a reception on December 3, 2007 at 5:30 p.m. for a performance at the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts. They needed two interested parties. Please contact Grady Miller if you are interested. 3. Mr. Miller let the commissioners know that this years Southwest Arts Conference is January 25, 2008. Please contact Suzanne to reserve a spot for this event.
