CITY OF PEORIA, ARIZONA ACACIA ROOM September 11, 2007 A Regular Meeting of the Arts Commission of the City of Peoria, Arizona, was convened at 8401 W. Monroe Street at 5:07 p.m. Members Present: John Buonagurio, Virginia Wordsman, Linda Ballance, Maureen Flanigan Members Absent: Marsha Hanson, Dorthea Crooks, Jane Brown Other Municipal Officials Present: Suzanne Stewart, Executive Assistant, Andre Licardi, Arts Officer Disposition of Absence(s): Approve the absence of Dorthea Crooks, Jane Brown and Marsha Hanson from the regular meeting held on June 12, 2007. Minutes: 1. Approve Regular Meeting Minutes of June 12, 2007: A motion was made by Commissioner Buonagurio to approve the minutes as written; the motion was seconded by Commissioner Wordsman. The minutes of the regular meeting of June 12, 2007 were approved unanimously. Note: The order in which the items appear in the minutes is not necessarily the order in which they were discussed at the meeting. Unfinished Business: 1. Discussion and possible action regarding potential purchase of art: None New Business: 1. Discussion regarding the 2008 Peoria Arts Grant Program: Mr. Licardi informed the commissioners that the 2008 Peoria Arts Grant checks were mailed out this week. He reiterated that only one grant was denied this year. Ms. Stewart reminded the commissioners that we needed a quorum to vote on the Peoria Fine Arts Association Grant due to the fact that several commissioners are members of the association. Chair Ballance suggested a special meeting be called to be able to vote on this grant. Ms. Stewart will speak with the City Clerk’s Office to see if that is a viable possibility. 2. Discussion and possible action regarding the 2008 Celebration of Artists: Mr. Licardi told the commissioners that he is working with the IT Department to get all the information regarding the 2008 Celebration of Artists on the City of Peoria’s web page. This will assist artists in submitting their registration and photos for next year’s event. Mr. Licardi let the commissioners know that the event will coincide with the Peoria Festival of the Arts and that the reception will be held on Friday, March 14th, 2008. Mr. Licardi noted that there is a possibility of cash awards being offered for this event and that the suggestion is being looked at by the City Attorney’s Office at this time. Mr. Licardi informed the commissioners that the Arizona Arts Alliance will provide information on Peoria’s Celebration of Artists to the artists in their database. This will hopefully increase the number of entries for our next show. 3. Discussion and possible action regarding the completion of the Peoria Pioneer Memorial Project Mr. Licardi let the commissioners know that invitations for the dedication of the Peoria Pioneer Memorial were distributed and mailed and that the dedication would take place on September 22nd at 9:00 a.m. He also stated that a councilmember from Peoria, Illinois would be attending the event as well. 4. Discussion regarding the Ann LaRose Pioneer sculpture project: Mr. Licardi discussed the statue that the city has purchased from Ann LaRose. The statue should be completed and installed in November 2007 and the dedication should take place in December 2007. The commissioners viewed the site that was selected by the City Manager for installation. They all agreed that it will be a nice place to install the statue. 5. Discussion and possible action regarding the Community Cultural Assessment and Community Arts Survey projects Nancy Dallett, our consultant for the Community Cultural Assessment and Community Arts Survey, has finished the preliminary assessment. Mr. Licardi and Mr. Miller will be reviewing the draft in the near future. 6. Discussion and possible action regarding the Peoria Arts Master Plan Mr. Licardi let the commission know that the Community Arts Survey went to a variety of cities to research their public art and art programs. Mr. Licardi stated the survey would be put on the city’s web page and they are looking into the possibility of conducting a phone survey. Mr. Licardi distributed a copy of the Master Plan Scope for the commissioners to review. He explained that is a very general Master Plan at this point.
