CITY OF PEORIA, ARIZONA ACACIA ROOM March 11, 2008 A Regular Meeting of the Arts Commission of the City of Peoria, Arizona, was convened at 8401 W. Monroe Street at 5:00 p.m. Members Present: John Buonagurio, Virginia Wordsman, Linda Ballance, Marsha Hanson, Jane Brown, Maureen Flanigan, Dorthea Crooks Members Absent: None Other Municipal Officials Present: Suzanne Stewart, Executive Assistant, Andre Licardi, Arts Officer Presentation: Ms. Julie Richard from the West Valley Arts Council provided a presentation regarding the West Valley Arts Study titled WV Cultural & Heritage Blueprint. Disposition of Absence(s): 1C Approve the absences of Maureen Flanigan and Dorthea Crooks from the regular meeting held on February 12, 2008. Commissioner Hanson made a motion to approve the absence, Commissioner Wordsman seconded the motion which passed unanimously. Minutes: 2C Approve Regular Meeting Minutes of February 12, 2008: A motion was made by Commissioner Buonagurio to approve the minutes as written; the motion was seconded by Commissioner Crooks. The minutes of the regular meeting of February 12, 2008 were approved unanimously. Note: The order in which the items appear in the minutes is not necessarily the order in which they were discussed at the meeting. New Business: 3R Election of Vice Chair The commissioners discussed nominations for Vice Chair. Commissioner Buonagurio made a motion to elect Maureen Flanigan as Vice Chair. Commissioner Brown seconded the motion which passed unanimously. 4R Celebration of Artists Mr. Licardi reported on the judging of artwork for the Celebration of Artists. He stated that two artists from our Sister City judged the artwork. Mr. Licardi reminded the commissioners that the reception was taking place Friday, March 14th at 7:00 p.m. There will be music, refreshments and prizes awarded at the event. The commissioners decided who would be hanging ribbons on the artwork. Commissioner Brown and Commissioner Flanigan volunteered to come in and hang ribbons on Friday morning. Chair Ballance will be announcing the winners at the reception and handing out the cash awards. Commissioner Wordsman, Commissioner Brown and Commissioner Flanigan volunteered to take down the artwork on Friday, March 21st. 5R Peoria Festival of Arts Discussion took place regarding who would be manning the Arts Commission booth at the Peoria Festival of Arts. Commissioners Wordsman and Flanigan volunteered their time between 10:00 am and noon on Saturday, March 15th and Commissioners Hanson and Brown volunteered their time from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Commissioner Buonagurio made a motion to accept the schedule, Commissioner Wordsman seconded the motion which passed unanimously. 6R Arts Master Plan Mr. Licardi told the commissioners that there was an article in the Arizona Republic regarding the Peoria Arts Master Plan. He stated the phone survey that was conducted may be included in the Arts Master Plan. Commissioner Buonagurio asked about the West Valley Arts Council presentation regarding a statewide master plan. Mr. Licardi stated that many cities do not want to follow the “WV Cultural and Heritage Blueprint”. That is why the City of Peoria is conducting their own Arts Master Plan. 7R Community Cultural Assessment Mr. Miller indicated that the results of the Community Cultural Assessment fell short of his expectations. It was intended to be a guide to creating policies but will not be used for this purpose. 8R Artist Bronagh Wright Mr. Licardi let the commissioners know that Bronagh Wright from our Sister City in Ireland will be doing a project with Sunrise High School. They will be constructing a totem pole with photographs of students. This project will be exchanged with our Sister City and when we receive their project it will be displayed not only at the school but hopefully in the lobby of City Hall. Mr. Licardi made the commissioners aware that he is working on a Master Plan for the Sister City Program. He would like to see our cities exchange artwork on a regular basis.
